Tywin is bathed in bright light while Cersei is in the dark shadows. Tywin takes Tommen away from Cersei, away from the darkness and up the stairs into the light. This is probably one of the only instances in the series where Tywin is "in the light" compared to another character. He is also acting Hand of the King .
Tywin was shrewd. He would have had the boy set right or put down. He likely would have had some ploy to make Joffrey better that would have involved the memory of Robert's prime. Joffrey wanted nothing more than Robert's approval, and to use that against Joffrey seems right up Tywin's alley.
